Today’s Rant: Learn to Drive

15 Dec

This is about three days late, but I need to get it off my chest.

People need to learn how to drive.  People who live in Pennsylvania especially need to learn how to drive.

On Sunday morning my husband and I were on our way to church, when we noticed a large truck driving somewhat erratically.  The roads were a bit slick, as we had gotten some freezing rain the night before, but they were certainly driveable if people took their time.

Oh wait, I forgot who I was talking about.

Anyway, turns out the large truck was slowing down because he’d heard about an accident on his radio.  Of course, we didn’t find this out until we rounded a corner and stumbled upon a huge line of traffic.  We found out later that a U-Haul, who was driving too fast, slipped on a bridge and collided with the median.  This probably caused a chain of events that scared another driver on the other side of the highway, who slipped on the same bridge and slid into an embankment.

We sat in traffic behind the U-Haul accident for an hour and forty-five minutes.  The accident on the other side of the road just happened to be right beside us, so we watched firemen cut the car to shreds to free its passengers.

As we were watching, I was struck by a thought.  Why can’t we just slow down?  This accident was caused by many factors, including crappy weather, but the majority of accidents that take place on a daily basis happen because people use bad judgment.

Almost every day of my work commute, either to or from work, I get cut off by someone or watch helplessly as it’s done to someone else.  I’ve thankfully avoided many this-close accidents in the past year.

I realize that things happen, and that sometimes we can’t help road conditions, but we could certainly improve the situation if we all took the time to drive less like idiots, and more like responsible adults.
