For Uncle Walt….

19 Aug

My professor, mentor and friend, Dr. Walter Nott, passed away yesterday August 18th, 2007. I am unable to attend his services this Wednesday, as I am traveling out of town to be in a wedding, so I wanted to take the time to write a few thoughts here.

I will miss his voice, his passion, his stories, his humor, everything that made him “Uncle Walt” to so many students.

Several weeks ago, he sent me a copy of Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. He wrote the following on the inside cover:

“If one advances confidently in the direction of her dreams, and endeavors to live the life which she has imagined, she will meet with a success unexpected in common hours – Thoreau, Walden

Meg, Advance confidently in the direction of your dreams; live the life you have imagined. All the best, Walt Nott”

He always believed in me more than I believed in myself. How grateful I am, that he took the time to write to me, to encourage me to pursue my dreams. Anybody who knew him knows that he always went above and beyond to help others. He was so much more than a professor; he was (and is) a friend.

I miss you Uncle Walt. Say hi to my homeboy Jonathan Edwards, alright?
